Over 2,350 parents visited the Show, which was an almost 100% increase on the inaugural 2007 visitor number and, in this economic climate, testament to the brilliant education that independent schools can provide. It is also worth noting that, in the run up to the show through October, we were getting over 1,500 visitors per day onto www.schoolsshow.com. However, we will of course continue to refine our marketing and endeavour to improve these numbers considerably again for 2009. Already at this early stage, 86 out of the 120 or so schools that exhibited this year have reserved their place at the Independent Schools Show 2009 (30-31st October). This is a very large proportion and emphasises the value of this event, re-affirming its position as the most significant Independent Schools showcase anywhere in the world. But even these overbearing adults are being elbowed aside by “helicopter parents”, who continuously hover over every aspect of their children’s lives – demanding perfection in exams, music and sport. The head of a leading girls’ school says that such parents create a “box-ticking” culture of achievement, leaving their children stressed and anxious about success. Vicky Tuck, headmistress of Cheltenham Ladies’ College, suggested that children were sometimes better off boarding to escape parental pressure at home. She told The Times that some of her school’s day pupils would benefit from boarding “because their parents are helicopter-parenting them”. Mrs Tuck spoke yesterday at the Independent Schools Show, which was advertised as a “one-stop shopping destination” for parents choosing a private school for their children.
