Many thanks to all who attended the
Independent Schools Show last weekend. Over 2,350 parents visited
the Show, which was an almost 100% increase on the inaugural 2007 visitor
number and, in this economic climate, testament to the brilliant education
that independent schools can provide. It is also worth noting
that, in the run up to the show through October, we were getting over
1,500 visitors per day onto www.schoolsshow.com.
However, we will of course continue to
refine our marketing and endeavour to improve these numbers considerably again for
2009.
Already at this early
stage, 86 out of the 120 or so schools that exhibited this year
have reserved their place at the Independent Schools Show 2009 (30-31st
October). This is a very large proportion and emphasises the value
of this event, re-affirming its position as the most significant
Independent Schools showcase anywhere in the world.
Some Visitor Comments:

Insightful information on independent
schools and a great overview
Fantastic show – got a real feel
for the schools meeting face to face
Very informative and extremely useful
Met two very suitable schools

Some Exhibitor Comments:

The storm clouds, (climatic and
economic) notwithstanding the exhibition was an incredible
achievement
Immaculately organised.
 Great atmosphere.
You moved things on from last year and
there is no doubt, credit crunch notwithstanding, that many more visitors came
over the two days

Thank you for the great show. It went very well for us!

A frequent courtesy shuttle service will also operate
from Sloane Square.
Please see the Schools Show website for further
information on participating schools and seminar programme.
Register now on www.schoolsshow.com
for free tickets to the 2008 Independent Schools Show (saving up to £20 per
family).

I have 2 sons, 4 and 8 years old. I missed the show
last year as I only heard about on LBC radio after the event.
My son is 6 years old and currently in year 1. We
want to send him to an independent school and would like to know more at the
school show. Can you please send us tickets.
My husband and I are very interested to attend the school
show at Battersea Park. My son Shawn is 6 years old and we intend to send
him to an independent school.
Very interested to attend as we are thinking of boarding
schools for my daughter
I have a daughter who will be 3 years old in September
and am interested in independent education for her
Please send 3 tickets, my husband and I intend to bring
our eldest son to meet various schools at the Schools Show

This will be a very important opportunity to meet schools
from further afield, please send 4 tickets - thanks
My daughter is now 2 years old. But I've learnt from
other mothers that we have to chose and apply for the school as soon as
possible as waiting lists to good schools are massive. Hopefully, this show
will help us

What a lifesaver – we had
been talking about schools and your ticket fell out of a magazine into my lap –
my wife and I will visit with our 6 year old and 4 year old on Saturday 1st
November, what a relief – thanks!

"Strutt & Parker is delighted to sponsor this
year's Independent Schools Show.

Over 1460
visitors attended the Independent Schools Show held in Battersea Park, London, on 2nd and 3rd
November 2007, where the Heads and staff of 123 schools met
prospective parents and their children. Numerous journalists attended
the Show including a camera crew from Sky and a BBC Radio 4 interviewer
for The Learning Curve which broadcast a feature length piece on Monday
4th November.

An Education
Theatre, with advice on Managing Teenagers, How to choose a School, How to Get
the Best Value and IB or Not to IB amongst the presentations drew lively
crowds of visitors who debated these and other topics with some of the
UK’s leading educationalists including Chris Woodhead, Ralph Lucas and Stowe’s
Dr Anthony
Wallersteiner.

“The Show was a
positive message for parents and schools alike. It was great to see both
prep and senior schools working side by side. And the location was a
crucial factor in attracting visitors” said a spokesperson for Brambletye Prep
school in Sussex. “This was a great event for
the school’s profile” said a representative of Eaton Square School. A spokesperson for
Grenville school, which offers a Dyslexia department said “This Show
demonstrates why the independent schools sector is thriving”. Other
exhibitors commented “… only serious enquiries” (Clifton), “…excellent way to
shortlist schools and tick lists” (Felsted) “…great for developing links with
other schools” (Kingswood) and “… a good opportunity for parents with young
kids to look to the future and confirm impressions” (Tudor Hall). As an
example of the interest shown, Cavendish School in London claimed interest from over 20 sets of
prospective parents in the first afternoon alone!

“As the first
show of its kind this millennium it was a challenge to predict the response
from parents – which has been overwhelming” says David Wellesley Wesley of
Next Step Exhibitions, the organisers. “Most reassuring is the fact that
there were no time wasters amongst the visitors, only genuinely interested
parents”.

Bookings for
next year at the same venue (Thursday, 30th October to Saturday, 1st November 2008) are already at 50% with a number of new exhibitors
showing interest in participating.

Boarding helps children escape pushy families, claims Vicky Tuck

From The Times

November 3, 2007

Boarding helps children escape pushy families, claims Vicky Tuck

By
Nicola Woolcock

Pushy mothers are famous for deluding themselves that Timothy or Georgina,
their apparently unremarkable offspring, are geniuses in the making. But
even these overbearing adults are being elbowed aside by “helicopter
parents”, who continuously hover over every aspect of their children’s lives
– demanding perfection in exams, music and sport.

The head of a leading girls’ school says that such parents create a
“box-ticking” culture of achievement, leaving their children stressed and
anxious about success.

Vicky Tuck, headmistress of Cheltenham Ladies’ College, suggested that
children were sometimes better off boarding to escape parental pressure at
home. She told The Times that some of her school’s day pupils would
benefit from boarding “because their parents are helicopter-parenting them”.

Mrs Tuck spoke yesterday at the Independent Schools Show, which was advertised
as a “one-stop shopping destination” for parents choosing a private school
for their children.

More than 100 independent schools were represented at the event in Battersea,
southwest London, sponsored by Coutts, the Queen’s bank. They included
Wellington College, Stowe, Roedean, Badminton and Millfield. Parents were
ferried in from Sloane Square, Chelsea, in courtesy cars.

Link to the full article
