St Mary's Calne
St Mary's Calne is a boarding and day school for around 365 girls aged 11–18. Approximately 80% of the girls board and it is a rich boarding life with all girls taking part in the full-curriculum and extra-curricular activities on offer.
Outstanding pastoral care
St Mary's is renowned for its outstanding pastoral care. The school has a close and caring community where every girl is known and cared for as an individual. Every girl has a Tutor to support and guide her through every aspect of school life; from organisational skills and subject choices through to university application.
All girls go on to higher education, and the new purpose-built Sixth Form Centre, a tailor-made lecture programme, a women in corporate culture conference, debating competitions, careers advice, leadership roles and much more prepare the girls for university and beyond. Different opportunities give the Sixth Form girls independence, yet they remain an integral part of the school and are fantastic role models for the younger girls.
St Mary’s is committed to providing an education that will challenge and inspire its pupils, as well as helping them to achieve excellent public examination results.
In 2018, the girls did exceptionally well, with 29% of them achieving straight A*s/As, among them Head Girl Farida, who secured her place to read Chemistry at Lincoln College, Oxford (one of eight girls who secured their places at Oxbridge). The girls went on to study at a range of leading Russell Group universities including: Oxford, Cambridge, Durham, Edinburgh, Exeter, Imperial, LSE, Newcastle, UCL and Warwick. They are now studying a diverse range of subjects, ranging from Architecture, Chemistry, Civil Engineering to Fine Art, Politics & Modern Languages, Law and Medicine. St Mary’s Calne is also the only independent school in the UK to hold the prestigious Platinum Science Mark Award.
Beyond the classroom
80% of girls play musical instruments and take part in a wide variety of ensembles. The girls perform at many events, both in the local community and further afield. Drama productions in the purpose-built theatre are of the highest standard and have transferred to the London stage. The Drama Department has a unique relationship with RADA, offering a course in advanced communication skills and girls also perform annually at the Edinburgh Fringe. The girls do exceptionally well in the Young Enterprise Programme, progressing to the National Final in 2017. Many pupils are talented artists and 2018 saw one girl win the Digital Prize in Saatchi’s National LOVE ART Competition and two girls had their works longlisted by The Arts Society to become Royal Society of British Artists (RBA) Scholars.
The girls excel at sport, and the school is represented at county level in several major sports, nationally in athletics and lacrosse, and internationally in horse riding, with all girls taking advantage of the superb sports facilities, including a new £2.55 million Sports Complex which opened in May, 2018. The girls also enjoy many other sports, including tennis, hockey, fencing and ski racing. Trips abound and this year included a Classics Trip to Rome, a French Trip to Samoens and a Music Tour to Poland.
It is the individualised approach to every aspect of school life that makes St Mary’s Calne special.
