Despite the number of pupils remaining largely unchanged, school fees have soared by 25% over the last five years, putting an increasing and enormous strain on families who want to choose independent education for their children. But will we see the end of this meteoric rise in school fees? And if so, when?

Mr Gavin Horgan - Headmaster of Millfield

Gavin Horgan became Headmaster of Millfield in September 2018. Gavin was previously Headmaster of Worksop College in Nottinghamshire since 2012, where he delivered academic turnaround aligned with a substantial building programme and whole school restructure.

Prior to Worksop College, Gavin's earlier career included working internationally in schools in Sri Lanka and Argentina, before returning to the UK in 2009 as the Deputy Head of The Glasgow Academy, an independent co-educational school with 1300 pupils. Gavin also has extensive experience of the state sector at schools in Hampshire and Lambeth.

Gavin has a degree in Classics from the University of Oxford.

Emma Hattersley, Head at Godolphin, Salisbury

Emma read music at Durham University before studying for two years on the post-graduate vocal studies course at the Royal Academy of Music.   

Emma was appointed Head at Godolphin, Salisbury in January 2014, an HMC boarding and day school for girls aged 3-18.  Her previous educational experience includes running a co-educational day house and then a girls’ boarding house at Canford School and this was followed by four years as Deputy Head Pastoral at Sherborne Girls. Emma has also been an examiner for the ABRSM and is a school governor at Twyford School.  She is Chair of the HMC inspections committee and is an inspector for ISI.  

Emma is married to Stephen and they have four grown up children.
