A ‘rounded education’ could be the tagline of the independent system, but what does it actually involve? Our experts discuss the newest approaches that are making ‘rounded’ students successful ones.
Emma was appointed Head at Godolphin, Salisbury in January 2014, an HMC boarding and day school for girls aged 3-18. Her previous educational experience includes running a co-educational day house and then a girls’ boarding house at Canford School and this was followed by four years as Deputy Head Pastoral at Sherborne Girls.
Emma has also been an examiner for the ABRSM and is a school governor at Twyford School. She is Chair of the HMC inspections committee and is an inspector for ISI.
Emma read music at Durham University before studying for two years on the post-graduate vocal studies course at the Royal Academy of Music.
Emma is married to Stephen and they have four grown up children.
Headmaster of Stowe since 2003, Anthony Wallersteiner was a History Scholar at Trinity College Cambridge and completed his Doctorate in Art Theory at the University of Kent. He was shortlisted for the Daily Telegraph and Spectator Young Journalist of the Year Competition for a report on dissident writers in Eastern Europe.
Anthony taught History, English and General Studies at Sherborne, St Paul’s and Tonbridge. In 2003 Anthony was appointed Headmaster of Stowe and won the title of Tatler Headmaster of the Year in 2006.
He governs at Maidwell, Ashfold and Winchester House School. Trusteeships have included membership of the Council of Tate St Ives, Children in Crisis (Chair) and, from March 2018, Chair of Street Child.
Gemma Gray is Director of Marketing & Admissions and a member of the Senior Management Team at Fettes College, Edinburgh, one of the UK’s leading co-educational boarding schools. Starting at Saatchi & Saatchi London, Gemma has over 20 years’ experience in advertising and marketing including major national and international campaigns for high-profile brands such as Johnson & Johnson, VisitScotland and Danone.
For the last 13 years Gemma has worked at Fettes College promoting their full-boarding ethos, all-round education, wealth of co-curricular opportunities and exceptional community spirit embracing the advancements in digital communication and social media along the way.
Gemma champions a ‘customer-focussed’ approach to Admissions and Marketing ensuring that prospective families receive relevant, concise, informative and engaging communications that answer the questions that matter to them. Gemma is passionate about promoting the benefits of independent education in Scotland and widening access to it. When not at work, Gemma can be found walking in the great Scottish outdoors with her husband, daughter & faithful whippet.
